Dr. Tom and Nancy Osborne started the TeamMates Mentoring Program in 1991 with 22 University of Nebraska football players and 22 Lincoln Middle School students. Now, the program serves about 8,000 students in 144 communities across Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, and Wyoming. The mission of the TeamMates Mentoring Program is to impact the world by inspiring youth to reach their full potential through mentoring. Mentors and mentees are matched based on hobbies and interests. They meet once a week at school during the academic year for about 30 minutes to an hour. During that time, matches play board games, do a physical activity or just talk. Mentees in the program have reported experiencing an increase of grades, attendance, and good behavior.
